What to Do When You Lose Your Car Keys

Before making any calls, do a systematic search of the most likely locations. Keys in pockets (check every pocket of every garment you have recently worn, including pockets of bags, backpacks, and work gear). Keys set down somewhere different (counters, desks, charging areas, bathroom counters, the most recently used surface in each room). Keys inside another bag or case. Keys fallen under a car seat or behind the console. The most important search technique: retrace your last 30 minutes mentally. Where did you park? What did you do between parking and realizing the keys are missing? Keys are most often in the last place you were before you looked for them -- not a random location. If you went straight from the car to a store, the keys are likely in the store, in the car, or in whatever container you were carrying.

Before calling for help, identify what you have. Do you have a spare key anywhere (home, family member, office)? For how much would it cost in time or inconvenience to retrieve the spare compared to having a new key made? Does your vehicle have a keypad entry code (Ford SecuriCode, some GM models)? Does your vehicle have a manufacturer app (Ford Pass, GM myChevrolet, Toyota app, etc.) that can remotely unlock it? If you have a spare key or access via app, you may not need any external service. If the spare is in your home and a family member can bring it, that is the fastest solution. Document your situation clearly before calling: vehicle year, make, model, approximate location, and whether you have any working keys available.
