Lost All Car Keys -- What to Do Right Now

Lost every key to your vehicle? Here's the exact step-by-step for getting back on the road without a dealer appointment or tow truck.

Call Now: (912) 348-4006

Losing all keys to a vehicle is one of the more stressful automotive situations because the car is physically inaccessible and cannot be moved without either forced entry or a tow. The good news: mobile automotive locksmiths handle all-keys-lost situations routinely and without a tow truck. We come to your vehicle's location, gain entry via non-destructive lockout techniques, and perform on-site key replacement and programming.

Possible Causes

Keys physically lost

Very Common

All keys were lost, left somewhere, or misplaced without a spare available.

Keys stolen

Moderate

Keys were stolen from you or from your vehicle. Requires immediate key system reset to prevent unauthorized access.

Keys lost by previous owner

Common in used vehicle purchases

Vehicle was purchased without all keys being transferred.

Step 1: Confirm All Keys Are Actually Gone

Before calling for service, do a complete search: every pocket of every garment recently worn, every bag or purse, desk drawers, charging spots, and the vehicle interior (visible from outside windows). Ask every family member who has access to the keys whether they have them. Check with wherever you were last -- retail stores, restaurants, offices often hold found keys at the service desk. If the keys were truly lost or stolen, confirm whether you have any other forms of vehicle access: manufacturer app remote unlock, keypad entry code (Ford SecuriCode, some GM models), or a key hidden in a magnetic box somewhere on the vehicle. Any of these allow you to access the vehicle before service arrives.

Step 2: Gather Your Documentation

Before calling a locksmith for all-keys-lost service, gather your documentation. You will need: a government-issued photo ID with your name and current address, and the vehicle's registration, title, or insurance card with the vehicle's VIN and your name as the owner. If the vehicle was recently purchased and you have a bill of sale with your name, that is also acceptable. Having this documentation ready when you call speeds the service considerably. We cannot begin any key programming service without ownership verification -- this is the primary protection against vehicle theft disguised as a service call.

Step 3: What the Service Visit Involves

When our technician arrives, they will: verify your identity and ownership documentation, perform non-destructive entry to access the vehicle interior and OBD-II port, connect to the OBD-II port and establish communication with the vehicle's immobilizer system, extract or calculate the security PIN required for key enrollment, cut the new key blade to specification, program the transponder chip or smart key fob, and test all functions including engine start before completing the service call. For smart key vehicles (push-to-start), the process also includes registering the proximity fob's LF and UHF parameters. For vehicles where you want all previous keys invalidated (recommended when keys were stolen), we perform a full system reset that removes all previously enrolled keys before adding only the new ones.

Do This

  • Complete a thorough search before calling (family members, recent locations, service desks)
  • Gather photo ID and vehicle registration, title, or insurance card
  • Note the vehicle's year, make, model, and VIN (visible through the windshield on the dashboard)
  • If keys were stolen, inform the technician -- a full key system reset is recommended

Don't Do This

  • Don't allow service without ownership verification -- if a locksmith offers to skip ID, use a different locksmith
  • Don't tow the vehicle without calling a mobile locksmith first -- in most cases towing is unnecessary

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make a key without the vehicle present?

We can cut the blade from code without the vehicle present. But programming the transponder chip requires physical access to the vehicle's OBD-II port -- so the vehicle must be present (or reachable) for a complete key that starts the engine.

How long does the entire process take?

From our arrival at your location: 45 to 90 minutes for most domestic vehicles, 60 to 120 minutes for European or high-security vehicles with more complex programming requirements.
